3rd Sunday of Lent, year A.

Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well

The Woman who Found the Well (John 4)

by Andrew Lansdown

Why, it was as if he lowered a pail into the well of my soul

and brought it back brimming with secrets.

All the time my waters rose to Him and I told Him things He already knew

because he first asked of me a drink – I a Samaritan and He a Jew.

And He offered me a Drink, said I should thirst no more.

I said, You have nothing to draw with; and the well is deep.

This caused Him to repeat His mystery;

A well of living water within you, springing up.

For a moment I mistook His meaning.

Thought I’d not have to come to the well again in the dust and heat

after the other women had come and gone.
