Council of the Society 2005
Council of the Society: "Its principal function is to review and evaluate the carrying out of decisions taken at the previous general chapter and to prepare for the next one. It fosters unity between the general council adn the provincial superiours and allows for adaptation to changes in the life of the Church." Cons. 168
The Council of the Society is a meeting of all the provincials and district/delegation superiors from around the world. Normally Councils of the Society are held mid-way between two general chapters, four years after a general chapter.

This particular Council of the Society is being hosted by the Province of Mexico, in the Bishops Conference Centre (CEM) not far out of Mexico City, from May 2nd to May 13th. There are thirty three participants at the Council; nine members of the general administration, eighteen current major superiors plus the provincial-elect of Oceania, four translators and one facilitator.

The agenda for the meeting includes policy documents in relation to Renewal of the Society, Restructuring of the Society, Education, Mission and Formation. The agenda also includes some legislative matters concerning the election of district superiors and councils of provinces, districts or delegations, and the composition of the general chapter. The Council must decide also on the time and place of the next general chapter, due to be held in 2009. The council is also the place for the re-election or election of assistants.
